Franks

Franks
Group of Germanic tribes who by the third century were settled on the east bank of the lower and middle Rhine (q.v.). They were united under Clovis (481-511), who became an Orthodox (q.v.) Christian and founded a kingdom in Gaul (q.v.). Frankish power culminated in the year 800, with the coronation of Charlemagne (q.v.). After 843 Charlemagne's empire fragmented and was reconstituted in the following century as the western empire (essentially medieval Germany [q.v.]), and as the fledgling nation-state of France (q.v.).
